Loft insulation
The cheapest thing you can do to a cold house — and a day’s work in most homes.
What the work involves
We check what is there before we price it.
An uninsulated or under-insulated loft loses more heat than any other part of a typical house. Putting that right is a day’s work in most homes, and it is the cheapest change you can make to what the house costs to heat.
If there is nothing up there
We lay insulation between the joists and then a second layer across them, so there is no gap at the timber for heat to escape through. The eaves are left clear so the loft can still breathe — insulation stuffed into the eaves is how a loft gets damp.
If there is old insulation
Most lofts we see have some. If it is sound we top it up to the recommended depth; if it has been squashed flat, contaminated, or disturbed by work in the loft, we take it out and start again. We tell you which, with the reason, before you decide.
Ventilation and downlights
Two things missed more often than they are done. Eaves trays keep the airflow at the edge of the loft, and covers keep insulation off recessed ceiling lights, which is a fire point. If your loft needs either, the survey says so and the quotation prices it.
0% VAT. Installed insulation currently qualifies for the zero rate on energy-saving materials, so there is no VAT to add to the quoted price.
What you are left with
A loft at the right depth, the hatch working, the floor clear of offcuts, and the old material bagged and taken away the same day.
