Insulation removal
Damp, crushed or spoiled material bagged, taken out and disposed of properly.
Out before anything goes in
Some insulation should not be topped up. It should be taken away.
Topping up over sound material is the cheap, sensible answer and it is what we do most of the time. But some lofts cannot be topped up honestly, and laying new wool over a bad layer hides the problem for a few years and then costs more to put right.
When it has to come out
- It is wet. Damp wool stays damp under a new layer and the timber above it stays wet with it.
- There are droppings in it. Birds and rodents leave more than mess, and nobody should be handling it without the kit for it.
- It has been crushed flat. Material compressed under boards for fifteen years does not recover when the boards come off.
- It is the wrong material. Loose fill that has drifted, or old slabs that have broken down to dust.
How we take it out
Bagged in the loft rather than carried down loose, so the dust stays where it is. Sheeting on the landing and the stairs. Masks and gloves for the crew, and the hatch area left clean enough that you would not know we had been up there, which is the part customers actually remember.
Where it goes
Out the same day, in our own van, to a licensed waste transfer station. We are a registered waste carrier where the work requires one, and the transfer note is yours on request — fly-tipped insulation comes back to the householder, not to the van it left in.
Asbestos — the honest answer
We do not remove asbestos, and nor should anybody who is not licensed for it. If something in your loft looks like it might be asbestos insulating board or old pipe lagging, we stop, we tell you, and we tell you who to ring. Work stops that day; it does not carry on with a guess.
Removal is priced separately. It is a different job from laying insulation, with different time and different disposal, so it appears as its own line on the quotation rather than being buried in a square-metre rate.
